Creation of Adam | Michelangelo
For this iconic and religious painting, the perfumer wanted to represent the creation and what followed. First, a forbidden apple note, green, fresh and fruity, along with spicy notes. Followed by a Grape Vine (Fig) Leaf note, that Adam and Eve used to conceal their nakedness after eating this fruit of good and evil knowledge. Saffron and sulfuric elements bring a fire note after they get banished from the Eden Garden like if they were going to hell, followed by a Leather note because they had to wear some clothes with animal skin. And as a finishing touch, smoky woods and incense that people used for praying to their gods.
Everything to represent the “creation”, its freshness, complexity and audacity.
The Swing | Jean-Honore Fragonard
In this painting, the eyes are caught by a young woman wearing a pink silk dress. She is tantalizingly positioned on a swing between her elderly husband and her young lover. The perfumer recreated the scene with an opening of very delicate fresh floral and fruity notes, such as peony, rosy, muguet, peach, pear & melon. A delicate and prude top note like the woman. But the more you look at the painting and the more you realize she is not so prude. So, the delicate floral fruity top note was counterbalanced with an intense woody, leathery and smoky back note.
Café Terrace at Night | Vincent Van Gogh
The idea was to recreate the atmosphere during the golden hour in spring/summertime. Its end of the day, honeysuckles start blooming in the air and it is getting fresher, and you can feel the night taking is place in the street. For the rest, you own the Night!
The Kiss | Gustave Klimt
The Kiss depicts an embracing couple kneeling in a grassy patch of wildflowers. The perfumer recreated the tranquility and intimacy of the scene and made an opulent floral fragrance with a flower usually attributed to women and make it for men, even though the fragrance is unisex. With this flower accord, an intimate skin effect was added by slightly leathery, warm and musky notes. Lastly, a masculine tuberose enveloped by a suede accord making it very warm and sensual. The fragrance is rich, opulent and peaceful.
Self-portrait with thorn necklace & hummingbird | Frida Kahlo
For this painting, the perfumer represented what she expressed and felt: pain! First, they used licorice (Anise Star) notes to express the darkness of her mind, with green notes of galbanum and spicy notes of black pepper, and pimento berries to represent the necklace. The pear is a symbol of class and nobility, to represent Frida’s character and strength, staying herself, even suffering. Followed by a heart of character and unique flowers: tuberose, orange flower and geranium. Finally, the base of the fragrance is composed of Patchouli, fir and leathery notes, representing the undergrowth, nature and animals.
Jacqueline Roque | Pablo Picasso
Picasso met Jacqueline Roque when she was 27 years old and he was 72. He romanced her by bringing her one rose a day until she agreed to date him, and they finally got married. This painting of her comes across very strict and cold. She doesn’t seem to be happy. The roses in the background and the red color of the painting is inspiring with an intense rose and leather fragrance; dark and cold. A spicy top note with pepper and cumin, an intense red heart with rose and cassis and a dark background with saffron, patchouli and leather is what made the fragrance special.
The Dancer | Keith Haring
In the late 80’s when Hip Hop was emerging as a dance style it inspired many people, especially the dance moves. With this fragrance, the perfumer created a new modern fougere as it symbolized virility in the history of fragrances, representing men going to the barbershop to have their beard cut. Juxtaposed to the virility of Hip Hop and the rappers of the 90’s.
Hip Hop is a dance of fast and hard movement, with a good coordination with the music, often in a speed cadence. The first smell will be explosive with spicy, citrus and fruity notes composed by black pepper, ginger, grapefruit, mandarin and bergamot. The heart with Marigold represents this new fougere: a huge character flower that symbolizes power, strength and light that lives inside a person.
Helped with juniper berry, geranium and coriander. The latter here is as a symbol: like Hip Hop, either you like it, or you hate it. Everything supported by oriental and woody base notes of cistus, guaiacwood and vetiver. The Idea of this fragrance was to create a contrast, between the character and virility of Hip Hop, with the artistic and freshness moves that it represents.
